Hello Teen Camp Staff 2009,
Welcome to 7th Season of Omega Teen Camp! I'm so happy to welcome you on board for a summer of great creativity, connection, inspiration, and meaningful, hard work. I'm Rebecca Sornson and I'm the Teen Camp Coordinator for this season. From now until you arrive on July 12th, I'll be in the office in Rhinebeck, NY to help you envision and plan classes, order supplies, and answer any questions that you may have about this summer.
Omega Teen Camp is unique in that it is programmed entirely around the amazing skills and talents of its counselors. The way that camp works is that each day, teens attend four activity periods of their choosing. Two of these activity periods are intensives. Intensives meet every day for 5 days for 75 minutes each day. In the past, we have had dance intensives which have resulted in a performance on Friday night, we've had garage band intensives, energy medicine and reiki intensives, mask-making, vegan cooking, high-ropes, and even synchronized swimming. Usually, you will have 10-20 teens in your intensive. The other two activity periods are 60 minute-one time only experiences which shift each day. These are often simple art project classes like making feather earrings, intro to guitar, dance and yoga classes, girl's and boy's circles, meditation, nature walks, canoeing, and swimming. These classes can have 10-30 participants in them depending on how many you can manage.
Over the next several weeks, I would like you to imagine up and roughly plan two 5-day intensives that you would like to lead and about 5 60-minute blocks that you would be interested in teaching. We encourage collaboration between counselors and you will almost always have another adult in your sessions to assist and support you. Please e-mail me or give me a call if you need someone to hash out your ideas with. Your imagination and a bit of good sense are your only limits!
Once you decide what you'd like to teach, we will need to order you supplies. We are happy to buy you whatever you need and the more specific you are, the easier it will be to ensure that we are well-stocked. We do have a few suppliers that we like to use for art supplies and here are links to their catalogues.

As soon as possible, if you can send us a list of supplies or equipment that you will need with amounts needed and sources for finding them (websites, phone numbers, etc.), and we'll get them for you.
Below is a link to the blog that we are creating as a home for all the pre-camp conspiring that's beginning to sprout up. Here you will find contact info for counselors, travel instructions, packing lists, and opportunities to begin sharing ideas about camp. Whenever something important is posted, I will e-mail everyone to let them know, but feel free to check the blog frequently and contribute.
We are also looking for one or two people to come and get trained to facilitate the High Ropes Course at camp this summer. Camp Henry Kaufmann is running a training June 1st through June 4th, and we will pay you an extra $300 to do this training. Let me know if you're interested.
Feel free to post comments on our blog. Adam wants to see comments!
ReplyDeleteHey Rebecca! Chris Zaccone here. I was wondering if you know if any other counselors are into wilderness skills? I'd love to do that intensive but I want to partner up with someone. Any help would be great! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would be able to do wilderness skills! I think that would be a lot of fun
