Class ideas are trickling in and I can tell that your imaginations are dancing.
Here's a few examples of ways to format your ideas that will help me in putting the schedule together and ordering your supplies. I'd love it if you'd title your classes, tell me whether it will be an intensive or a one-period class, and give me a short description of what the class will be like.
Intensives:
First a title. Then a short description.
Beyond Yoga: Over 5 days, we will dive into yoga philosophy, asana, breath, history, and meditation to begin exploring the breadth of yogic tradition.
Then your supplies (or you can put all the supplies that you need together on a list at the bottom)
Supplies:
Small paper journals- moleskin.com - 30
12 small mirrors (for mirror meditation)
Here's another example:
Art in Motion (this is going to happen this year!)
This intensive will allow the kids to express art through the energy of music. This can be done mostly with a stick and anything else that will cause drips like Jackson Pollock.
Supplies:
I will need at least 20 old sheets per week to paint on ( they are cheaper than canvas and dry quicker).
One-Shot Classes:
Reggae Chillout
We'll hang out and share our favorite reggae music. I'll tell a few stories about artists and songs and we'll chill.
Supplies: none (we have music hook-ups and cd players and such)
Feather Earrings
We'll make feather earrings and I'll give some info about the types of feathers that we're using and maybe tell a Native American myth about feathers and birds.
Supplies:
feathers- grouse, pheasant
specify kind of wire
Earring parts
(obviously I'm not well-versed on jewelry supply terms that's why I would really appreciate specificity and websites where I can get your supplies for you!)

hi rebecca,
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how to make a post on this blog - could you explain it to me?
thanks
georgios
hey ya'll!!! I'm super excited for Omega this year!!! My goal is to make the martial arts program a bit more structured and intensive. I don't know what our budgets look like, but I've got a bit of a supply list going.
ReplyDeleteSelf Defense:
Going into the basics of self defense, both physical and mental. This intensive would set the students up for defensive confrontation. My goal for this class is to teach campers to be more aware of their surroundings and bodies, and provide them with the tools to defend themselves if need be.
Supplies:
5-10 Quick Shields (punching pad)
http://www.martialartsmart.net/10836.htm
1 Muai Thai Striking pads
http://www.martialartsmart.net/vinthaisstri.html
2-3 Foam Shield (kicking pad)
http://www.martialartsmart.net/10-812.html
Women's Self Defense:
Women are statistically more often to be the victims of violent crimes. The goal of this course is to alleviate these numbers, and to give young girls a more confident outlook on the world. I would also like to see people see their own power both mental and physical.
Japanese Sword Work:
Not many warriors can stand up to the awesome might of a japanese samurai. These warriors followed a strong lifestyle of loyalty and discipline. This class will examine the angles of the samurai's intricate fighting style, and provide students with a base understanding of the Japanese Katana.
Supplies:
15-20 Wooden Daitos
http://www.martialartsmart.net/40-03.html
I'm playing around with a "warriorship" class for boys. I think that there's an overall lack of appreciation for the male form, not to mention boys are very rarely asked what kind of man they want to be. I'm probably not the only one with the idea that the stereotypical 'manly man' has many traits to be desired. I don't know exactly how I'm going to go about this, but if anyone has any ideas I'm more than open to them.
Ditto, shaihuludshaitan. I don't know how to post like new. But here's a couple ideas.
ReplyDeleteHey, You Wanna Play Magic?! YEAH!! Let's Play Magic
Magic: The Gathering is a popular, very fun card game. Its rules are often hard for beginners, but we'll have rule and strategy books and a novice pro.
Supplies: Magic the Gathering 10th Edition Theme Deck Set of 5 X2 (so that's 10 decks total), some paper and pencils
http://store.themonstore.com/maga10edthde.html
Oh, that's pretty-- WOA!
A palindrome is a word or sentence or music piece or epic poem that reads the same from back to front, like "racecar". In this activity, we'll draw, in a calligraphic-sort-of way, by utilizing the second dimension, a palindrome of a word or phrase. What the heck does that mean?! You'll see.
Supplies: Artsy paper and pencils, quality detail erasers (I don't know a good place to get these)
Oh, that recent email Adam sent out asked for activities to do when we first get together during orientation before the kids arrive.I've got some great ideas.
ReplyDeleteThere's the Ha-Ha game (pretty much the perfect game. Laughing is guaranteed.) which is where a bunch of people lay down with their head on someone else's stomach and one person says "ha" trying not to laugh. The next person does the same, saying "ha ha." Then it goes on, with an additional "ha" on each person. You go as long as you can without laughing... which is often not very long.
Another game is where everyone gets a partner and one closes their eyes and we all agree upon a theme for what sound the non-eye-closing person has to make while moving around an area, so the listener has to pick out their partner's sound that they agree upon in advance and tries to move toward it. It's hard to hear your partner's sound over all the noise, but that's part of the fun, and that you bump into a lot of people with your eyes closed. Then you switch roles or partners.
Another one has everyone secretly, randomly choosing a person to avoid and another to attract them. Then everyone starts moving around the room or field or wherever, always making sure to have both people in their view, but trying to maximize distance from one person and minimizing it to another. it sometimes looks like a deranged school of fish.
I was looking at the feather earrings suggestion, and if you are looking for a good place to get jewelry supplies I suggest www.firemountaingems.com
ReplyDeleteAnd now that I think about it, I would love to do an intensive jewelry making week. There is so much people can do with beads and string and wire. I will look up some of the items I would need and get back to you on that!
Hi All! I'm excited to get involved in this brainstorming session and meet all of you! Here's my list of ideas based on some workshops I teach and other fun hobbies...let me know what you think. Rebecca, I wasn't sure if the art intensive you mentioned was referring to an idea I ran by Adam or not, so I included it here just in case =)

Shari, those ideas sounds so amazing! Can I take your classes? Man, I wish I were a camper! I can't wait to meet everyone!
ReplyDeleteGeorgios and I are running a holga photo workshop. I believe Omega has already bought the film & cameras but I'd like to hear more definitely about whats going to be available to us.
ReplyDeleteworkshop ideas-
D&D lifestyle-
over the course of the week we will be playing D&D and developing characters. Workshop will be focused on manifesting a fictional fantasy world & creative, collaborative storytelling. If we have time we will be making costumes, art, writing, enchanted obsidian orbs of draconic power, etc inspired by the fantasy world we create. Workshop will be difficult to run with any more than 6 people.
Zinedrokt's palace of poetry-
weeklong poetry writing workshop. Every day there will be optional writing prompts & a time to share what we wrote with each other. If there's access to a copier we will make a zine at the end to take home.
Consent-
I'm interested in doing a one-shot workshop that is a consent discussion group. We will be going over consent & what it means in the context of a framework for respecting the people we share a space with.
Ahna's going to help out with the consent workshop
ReplyDeletefor collaborative storytelling D&D workshop we'd appreciate cool clothes to wear, fabric & props if anyone has cool or conceivably fantasy-themed stuff.
Hi guys!
ReplyDeleteI felt so drawn to be apart of OTC this year when I saw Adams booth set up at a recent Omega workshop in NYC and I can't wait to learn and row with you all! Here are my class ideas and background as far as how else I could be of service. Can't wait to meet you all...anyone in the NYC area...?
Rebecca-all I need is for the kids to bring journals and pens...does that need to be ordered or would they have their own and just need to be told to bring them?
Guided Meditation:
During this 30 min meditation we will go on a journey to where our souls are united and where we can permeate the duality of our daily lives-come feel the love! followed by journaling, discussion and sharing.
improv games for oneness and unity!:
in this activity we will discuss "systems theory" and where it shows up in our world and in our personal lives. We will use this theory to test out classic improv games and see if our experiment can give us a new perspective on our roles as part of the whole.
I'm a psychic you're a psychic:
in this activity we will explore what being "psychic" is all about and begin to tap into our own abilities to bring up information from the ever existing energetic stream we all have access to!
"you spot it you got it"
come see how our judgement of others is actually a key signal pointing us towards how we can love ourselves!
intensives:
wise inside:
During this intensive you will search for wisdom inside yourself vs. outside from parents, teachers and society. You will discover, explore and embark on a journey to own and be connected to your INNER wisdom.
channeling 101:
Ever wonder what it's all about? come see how powerful your physical body really is and what you can "channel" through you beyond just your own thoughts!
This intensive will use body relaxation techniques, energy and aura clearing exercises and activities to expand the body's natural ability to channel multiple sources of information from different sources.
I have a background as a trained actor, a certified holistic health counselor, a certified empowerment coach, an incomplete masters in marriage and family therapy, training in redirecting children's behaviour and conscious parenting and experience working with clients both one on one and in groups utilizing these skills and other intuitive abilities.
I would love to help plan an "Apache relay" -an all camp relay race as well as anything else that involves scavenger hunting and the like.
If anyone wants to team up let me know!
Shira - I love your ideas!
ReplyDeleteI posted a bunch of my own above figuring that the OTC folks from last year would know the best to do. If I can I'd like to team up with you (ok, so I really want to learn from and enjoy all your experience!)
Looking forward to meeting everyone,
Shari
Shari- ditto on you too! I've already checked out your website which is so beautiful! please teach me how to have my own yoga practice! call me if you want to discuss anything...or anyone can call me! cel-516 445 5012
