Camp Songbook

Hello All,

Please post (or comment on this post) your favorite OTC songs. They can be songs that we've sung for years or ones that you'd like to teach this summer. We'll compile them and teach them to each other during Staff Orientation. Maybe we can figure out how to make an OTC cd this summer!
Words are good, links to youtube videos are good...time to make some music.

peace.

  1. At another camp I worked at, singing was essential to daily life! I have tons of songs in my brain as well as a songbook we used a lot called Rise Up Singing. I am not sure what kind of songs you sing at this camp, but I can't wait to learn new songs, and teach some as well!

  2. We sing songs about the Earth, and songs in the sweat lodge, and silly songs, and Beatles songs and songs like 'I kissed a girl and I liiiked it' and are totally open to new songs.

  3. Here's an example of a song that we like to sing.

We are one with the infinite sun.
    Forever and ever and ever.

We are two with the luminous moon.
    Forever and ever and ever.

(Then there's some beautiful Native American words that I don't remember...anyone want to help me out?)

  5. I have a family friend who's written TONS of songs for camp... I will try to get ahold of him and see if I can get ahold of them or learn them from him.

  6. Jokull's campfire songs that come first to mind:

    1. Upside down by Jack Johnsson (great song about curiosity and how we should embrace it to understand the world)
    2. Give peace a chance by John Lennon (great jam session song, you don't have to have any musical talents, just stomp your feet, clap your hands and shout out the words!)
    3. The times they are-a changin' by Bob Dylan (the title speaks itself)
    4. Kumbayah (there is no way you're going to have a campfire sing-a-long without this song, and if there is anyone in the camp who knows how to harmonize it can be a beautiful and peaceful moment for everyone there)
    5. When the saints go marching in (there is an amazing slow acoustic version of this song performed by Bruce Springsteen, you can hear it on youtube)
    6. Down in the river by Diana Kraull (A beautiful gospel/folk song that can be sung in a capella, and the best part is that you don't have to be religious to enjoy this song :) )
    7. Tiny dancer by Elton John (If you've seen the movie almost famous and remember the scene in the bus you'll get why I picked this song lol)
    8. Ring of fire by Johnny Cash (I just had to put a Johnny Cash song there, any song by him could work, this was just the first one I could think of)
    9. Stand by me (such a wonderful and classic song that everyone should know)
    10. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen (although I prefer the Jeff Buckley version, another classic song that everyone should know)
    11. Any classic song from Walt Disney (I'm a huge Disney fan myself and the songs bring out a good nostalgic feeling)
    12. I'll follow you into the dark by Death cab for cutie (Beautiful lyrics and an indie song that most teens already know)
    13. Proud Mary by CCR (a classic and fun song)
    14. Have you ever seen the rain by CCR (another classic)
    15. 500 miles by the proclaimers (an excellent one hit wonder that brings out a good mood anywhere at any time)
    16. Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep blue something (another classic one hit wonder that's fun to sing)

  7. SONG:

    We are circling, circling together
We are singing, singing our heart song
    This is family,
    This is unity,
    This is celebration,
    This is sacred

    SONG:
Oh Great Spirit move through me
I am you and you are me
    We are one in unity
Help me to live in harmony

    Rachel Edwards

    keya wahtey lenya lenya mahotay
    hiyano hiyano hiyano
    keya wahtey lenya lenya mahotay
    hiyano hiyano hiyano

and could we forget medicine bear's OH GREAT MYSTERYYYYYYYY
but i don't remember the whole thing, maybe he could teach it to us again. is he coming back for staff week? i think the medicine pipe ceremony really brought us all together.

  9. Awesome songs! I have lots of songs like that tucked away. As well as many sweat lodge chants I used at my last camp. I probably couldn't type them all out here!
