Hey yall! Chris here. Last summer I helped to teach a class called Wilderness Skills that I would really like to do again! I'd like to focus on nature awareness, camouflage, stalking, some primitive fire making/cooking and maybe even hide tanning if I can get my hands on enough squirrels for the kids! I'm open to anything and would love to collaborate with someone who is passionate about nature.
It's going to be a great year!!!
Chris

I am really into this idea. I haven't had too much experience with stalking or hide tanning, but I love the outdoors and I have spent a lot of time backpacking and know some about wilderness skills. I would love to contribute if I could
ReplyDeleteCool Sarah! Sounds like you and I will get along well! If you're interested, shoot me an email with any ideas you have, the things you like best about nature, whatever you find to be relevant!

ReplyDeleteI've tanned some roadkill hides before, and have done some nature skills stuff too. I actually have a big old untanned (basically rawhide) buffalo hide in my basement that we could maybe use (ive never tanned anything that big before tho)

Ooh! Wow, buffalo would be intense. I've only done squirrels thus far, I have a deer hide/head in my freezer right now, going to try it in June. I would love to try the buffalo hide, I'd imagine it'd be a lot of work but fun. Do you think that could work with the kids though? Maybe taking turns? I wonder if we could have three instructors for an intensive.

hey chris,
ReplyDeletei'd be ok with cutting the hide in thirds if that would allow a group of kids to work it easier. would you be brain or chemical tanning?

Hi Chris, I would love to contribute to a nature experience class. I dont' know how to tan hides, bt I was thinking of a nature sculpture class where you collect some findings on a hike and make a sculpture with them. I love to spend time outdoors and would enjoy contributing. Sally
ReplyDeletewow, sorry for the late responses guys. sally, last year we did a few "art in nature" classes. that'd be a really fun class to do. sometimes it's hard to get the kids into it, we should collaborate during staff week.
ReplyDeletegeorgio-
that's a good idea! do you think there would be a tiff over who gets to take their piece home? i'd prefer to brain tan. never chemical tanned before. we can buy pig brains online or at a local butcher. maybe we could do a small class of 6, 2 kids to each hide?
